Why do fighters lose their ability to take a punch?
It seems the human body can adapt to almost everything. You get calluses when you work with your hands alot, you get a tan from the sun, for gods sake even your nuts can turn hard from being struck too much. Y is it then that the more you get rocked/ko the easier it is the next time. Ive noticed this in alot of boxers and mma fighters such as Mike Tyson Chuck Liddell and Vandelie Silva.
The first things to "go" tend to be speed and reflexes, Roy Jones is an example of this. Punch resistance and punching power are the last attributes to diminish, punchers will always be punchers, such as George Foreman.
However, if a fighter takes a lot of punishment over the course of his career the accumulative effect of the blows do take their toll. The body simply has too much wear and tear and it physically isn't as durable and can't recover as quick as before. It also depends on the style of fighters, a slugger (Ricky Hatton) who takes lots of shots is increasingly likely to lose more punch resistance than a fighter who has had defense as a main priority throughout their career (Winky Wright).
There is no such thing as building up a tolerance to punches at an advanced fighting age, any punishment absorbed carries over into the next fight and only wears the body down.
